HMS Vanguard is the lead ship in the Royal Navy's 'V' Class nuclear ballistic missile submarines (SSBN), which include HMS Vanguard S28, HMS Victorious S29, HMS Vigilant S30 and HMS Vengeance S31. The Vanguard was built by Vickers Co Ltd, she was launched in 1992 and completed a year later. It was the first British submarine armed with 16 Trident D-5 missiles, each with up to 12 MIRV nuclear warheads. Each submarine is capable of destroying 192 separate targets. The V Class submarines are also equipped as "hunter-killers" with sophisticated sonar and other sensors. Four bow torpedo tubes can fire Spearfish guided torpedoes or Tomahawk cruise missiles, two decoy launchers are also fitted. Vanguard was fully updated in 2002-04, returning to service in 2005. The V Class submarines have a displacement of 17,560 tons submerged and a maximum speed of 26 knots, normal crew is 14 Officers and 121 ratings.
